Senior Back-End Developer (Python), Brampton, ON
(12-Month Contract)
Loblaw Technology and Analytics is looking for an experienced, dedicated Senior Back-End Developer to join our fast-growing team of Engineers, Front-End Developers and Designers to build and enhance Loblaw's digital platforms and applications.
You will bring extensive experience in designing, developing, and optimizing robust back-end services, with a strong focus on Python and API performance. Your expertise will be crucial in ensuring seamless interactions between our back-end systems and front-end applications, contributing to highly performant and scalable solutions. This includes architectural design and review, implementation of efficient APIs, and optimization of existing codebases. You will collaborate with an accomplished team of Product Managers, Designers, Developers, Data Scientists, and Engineers to deliver high-quality, impactful solutions at scale. Our platforms are critical to Loblaw’s long-term strategy, directly impacting revenue and customer satisfaction. As a Senior Back-End Developer, you’ll play a key role in driving their evolution for this 12-month contract.

What You’ll Do:
- Design, develop, and maintain highly performant and scalable back-end services and RESTful APIs using Python, ensuring optimal interaction with front-end applications.
- Provide architectural guidance and champion best practices for robust back-end systems, including driving improvements to existing features, advising the development of new microservices, and integrating with third-party solutions.
- Identify and implement optimizations for back-end code and API endpoints to enhance speed, efficiency, and overall application responsiveness.
- Add value as a strong individual contributor, demonstrating the feasibility of new technical approaches and estimating their impact on system performance and business value.
- Partner closely with diverse, cross-functional teams – Front-End Developers, Product Managers, and Engineers – to deliver enhancements to existing functionalities and create innovative new features.
What you Bring:
- Extensive practical industry experience in developing and optimizing large-scale, production-level back-end systems and RESTful APIs.
- Advanced proficiency with Python and SQL, with a deep understanding of its ecosystem for back-end development and API optimization.
- Strong experience in designing, building, and optimizing end-to-end applications in cloud environments (e.g., GCP), with a focus on performance and scalability.
- Proven ability to optimize back-end code and ensure efficient interactions with front-end applications.
- Demonstrate practical experience in packaging and deploying applications as APIs, utilizing containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
- Solid understanding of software engineering best practices (e.g., object-oriented programming, automated testing, clean code) and experience with Git workflows, Jira, and Confluence within Agile product development environments.
- A Master’s or Ph.D. degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, etc.) is preferred.
