The Opportunity: Director, Workflow Optimization & Capacity Planning
We are seeking a strategic and technical leader to spearhead capacity planning and process optimization initiatives across Loblaw and Shoppers Drug Mart's extensive national pharmacy network. As Director, Workflow Optimization & Capacity Planning, you will be the principal architect and technical product owner for our critical scheduling and labour planning models. This role demands a hands-on approach to designing, developing, and deploying sophisticated analytical solutions that directly shape pharmacy workflows, ensuring they are not only efficient and scalable but also fully aligned with our patient care and experience objectives.
This pivotal role operates at the intersection of operational strategy, advanced workflow engineering, and complex analytical modeling. You will drive high-visibility, cross-functional initiatives deliver measurable improvement at national scale, collaborating with Pharmacy Operations, Finance, HR, and Technology. The right candidate pairs strong business acumen with deep technical expertise, someone who is equally comfortable updating code and performing deep analysis as making strategic operational recommendations to executives and committees alike.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the technical design and continuous development of complex capacity planning models, advanced scheduling algorithms, and robust scenario analysis frameworks to optimize Pharmacy Operations.
- Serve as the technical product owner for our enterprise planning and scheduling tools, ensuring their accuracy, scalability, and alignment with operational realities through rigorous technical validation and feature development.
- Design and execute workflow and process analysis via operational time studies and in-depth workflow assessments, leveraging statistical methods to validate assumptions, identify inefficiencies, and pinpoint opportunities for significant process re-engineering.
- Translate strategic business goals and stakeholder requirements into executable technical initiatives and analytical deep-dives that enhance workflow efficiency, patient care, and experience through system and process optimization.
- Lead the productive labour component of the enterprise planning and budgeting process, ensuring model outputs seamlessly integrate with financial processes and systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional Operations, Technology, and store teams to develop and deploy sophisticated decision-support tools that empower store-level planning and performance.
- Develop and oversee data-driven business cases for labour and workflow transformation initiatives, quantifying potential impacts, technical feasibility, and verifying alignment to our operational strategy
- Define, implement, and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) using advanced analytics platforms to evaluate efficiency gains and overall operational effectiveness, providing continuous feedback for model refinement.
- Champion a culture of systems thinking, operational excellence, and data-driven decision making across the organization.
Qualifications & Experience:
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Science, Data Science, or another quantitative discipline.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in analytical roles, ideally including positions in technical consulting or operational transformation, with a strong emphasis on quantitative modeling and process optimization.
- 5+ years in leadership roles, with a proven track record of driving high-impact, cross-functional technical initiatives and leading analytical teams.
- Strong business acumen coupled with understanding of financial models
- Ability to translate complex analytical insights and technical solutions into measurable process improvements and drive their successful execution.
- Prior hands-on experience in writing code (e.g. Python, R, Javascript, VBA) for algorithm development, analytical scripting, or developing complex automation
- Proficiency in SQL for complex data extraction, manipulation, and analysis from large datasets would be a strong asset
