Position Overview

The Director, Commercial Finance, will lead the Commercial Finance capability supporting Enterprise Sourcing’s Cost transformation strategy at Canada’s leading Food and Drug Retailer. The role is accountable for establishing annual value targets, maintaining an enterprise-wide view of sourcing performance, and ensuring that negotiated supplier value is accurately assessed, actively managed, and realized.

As a senior finance partner to Sourcing, Merchandising, Divisional Finance leadership, the Director will provide strategic insight and financial governance across the full value lifecycle—from target setting and deal valuation through performance tracking and value realization.

Reporting to the Sr. Director, FPA, this role will be responsible for leading a dedicated Commercial Finance team and play a critical role in supporting one of the key strategic areas of the Enterprise.

Key Accountabilities

Enterprise Target Setting and Financial Planning

  • Partner with Sourcing Leadership team to develop financial building blocks to support annual, quarterly and periodic targets by BU
  • Provide senior leadership with clear visibility into the timing, composition, and achievability of planned value on a periodic basis

Deal Valuation and Financial Governance

  • Establish and maintain a consistent methodology for determining incremental deal value.
  • Evaluate key deal assumptions, including baselines, volumes, timing, implementation profiles, mix impacts, and incremental value.
  • Partner with Financial Planning & Analysis team to confirm that agreed deal value and execution commitments are reflected in financial forecasts

Performance and Value Management

  • Establish reporting standards to evaluate value leakage is identified early and actively addressed
  • Review actual and forecast performance against annual and periodic targets as well as against overall volume and category impacts
  • Identify emerging value gaps, delivery risks, and opportunities requiring management attention.
  • Provide clear and timely reporting to executive leadership on value realization, financial risks, and required interventions.

Strategic Business Partnership

  • Serve as the senior Commercial Finance partner to Sourcing, Merchandising, and Divisional Finance leadership.
  • Provide financial perspective and constructive challenge on sourcing strategies, supplier negotiations, and value assumptions.
  • Support leadership discussions concerning supplier performance, cost gaps, category economics, and program priorities.

Team and Capability Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop the Commercial Finance team.
  • Establish clear accountabilities, operating rhythms, analytical standards, and performance expectations.
  • Build scalable value-management processes, tools, scorecards, and management reporting.
  • Coach the team on commercial analysis, problem solving, and stakeholder management.
  • Promote strong collaboration across Commercial Finance, FP&A, Sourcing, Merchandising, and Divisional Finance.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, Analytics or a related discipline.
  • +10 years of progressive experience in commercial finance, strategic finance, FP&A, sourcing finance, category finance, analytics or a related area.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex financial planning, target setting, and performance-management processes.
  • Strong understanding of commercial value drivers, cost of goods, supplier economics, and deal valuation.
  • Strong financial modelling skills in Excel, analytical, and management-reporting capabilities required.
  • Experience partnering with senior executives and influencing cross-functional decisions.
  • Proven people-leadership experience, including developing high-performing finance teams.
  • Retail, consumer goods, sourcing, procurement, or merchandising experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with tools such as Power BI, MicroStrategy, SAP, is an asset.
